Lewis & Clark College is a private, independent, liberal arts college in Portland, which is a city in the US state of Oregon, with a population of more than 582 000 inhabitants (2009), which makes it US's 30th most populous city, as well as the state's most populous city, and the 3rd most populous one in the Pacific Northwest, after Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
The college was established in 1867 and first started as the Albany Collegiate Institute, in Albany, before being moved to Portland, in 1938, adopting its current name in 1942, after the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It offers its students `an education built from the time-tested elements of careful study, original research, and spirited debate`, through its College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), the Law School, and the Graduate School of Education and Counseling.
Lewis & Clark's athletic teams are known as the Pioneers and they compete in the Northwest Conference, at the NCAA Division III level.
